Puerto de la Cruz is the oldest resort in Tenerife. It has been drawing visitors since the early 19^th century. They first came as patients prescribed by doctors to spend days in a refreshing environment, than as tourists who arrived on the sunny Canarian coast to escape the extreme temperatures of their homelands. In the last 50 years, the resort has grown with international investors pouring in money to build hotels, commercial centres, restaurants, etc. Today Puerto de la Cruz stands as singularly the most impressive modern resort in north Tenerife, but not without a dominant Canarian fervor. Modern, yet traditional, Puerto de la Cruz is the place to be to experience the best of both worlds.

The Playa Jardin is the main beach in Puerto de la Cruz. The beach is flanked by numerous hotels. You can select from a wide choice of 4, 3 and 2-star hotels and numerable 5-star resorts. There are also great quality apartments, inns and rental homes to be found along the beach. Playa Jardin has excellent snorkeling and windsurfing conditions, also closely located to Loro Parque and several of Puerto de la Cruz’s quieter, secluded beaches.

Other notable beaches of Puerto de la Cruz are the black sandy beach of Martianez, the San Telmo urban beach, and the El Muelle beach with breakwaters protecting against the Atlantic waves. Martianez and El Muelle have calm water conditions, the latter also home to small fishing boats. San Telmo attracts a fair share of tourists, but quieter than Playa Jardin. Most hotels along the beach are less than 15 minutes walk from these beaches, although those around the ‘new’ town center may take a little more time.
