Northern Cyprus Getting there and around

The embargo on Turkish Cypriot ports restrict direct charter flights and trade traffic through the Turkish Cypriot ports to Northern Cyprus. The Gecitkale and Ercan are the only legal airports for entry of vacation charters through Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Since 2004, there have been flights connecting some European countries (including UK) to the Republic of Cyprus. Trade between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are allowed since the opening of the Green Line. Tourists headed to Northern Cyprus will usually fly to Republic of Cyrpus and then to Northern Cyprus by crossing the Green Line. A ship tour between Latakia in Syria and Famagusta in Northern Cyprus is also available.

The mode of public transport in Northern Cyprus is limited to private buses, taxis and service taxis or ‘shared’ taxis. The island’s main harbor is Kyrenia, but the old ports of Famagusta and Gazimagosa in east of Northern Cyprus, also service cargo and passenger boats.
