With the opening of the year 2011, there are new hopes and desires among UK holidaymakers towards having enjoyable vacations. Adventure holidays as well as voluntourism are growing popular, so is the appeal of holiday destinations from the Middle East. In fact, long-haul holidays from the UK seem to be taking the centre-stage once again after a reigning dominance of short-haul breaks and European city breaks in 2010.

Here are some of the trends we think will take shape with the holiday scene in 2011, for travellers from the UK:

Dubai has long been a much-sought-after tourist destination of the Middle East. But of late, Jordan has entered the list of holiday spots from the region. From March 2011, easyJet is introducing flights to Amman. Summer temperatures in this part of the world range around 40C, so spring or autumn 2011 holidays to Jordan would be a good idea.

Adventure travel has really caught up with travellers from the UK. And 2011 would see more people going in for holidays that give them a high. For satiating the spirit of the adventurer in you, head off to Nepal for it has numerous mountain trails to check out, including the mighty Everest.

Colombia has been a great holiday spot for those looking for luxury holidays per se. With beautifully furnished boutique hotels in Medellin and Bogota, Colombia is a popular choice for the high-end crowd. In 2011, it is estimated that the Latin American country will continue to be a holiday hotspot.

Short to medium haul sunny destinations would be in demand for 2011. Outside of the Europe, Egypt and Turkey are in-demand holiday destinations, closely followed by Libya which is often sought after by adventure lovers. As per the Thorn Tree Forum of the Lonely Planet, Libya is aiming at 1.5 million tourists a year as part of its 2008-12 tourism plan.

City break holidays have been quite popular with British travellers over recent years. Now, the Italian city Turin has joined the list of value-for-money weekend holiday destinations for holidaymakers from the UK. With a host of events lined up in Turin for celebrating 150 years of the unification of Italy, 2011 will see an increase in the number of tourists visiting the city.

New Zealand
Autumn 2011 would witness a major tourist inflow to New Zealand with the Rugby World Cup in the pipeline. Since it is one of the biggest tournaments in the history of the country, there will be a plethora of cultural and entertainment events across New Zealand.

Sierra Leone
The Sierra Leone beach is one of the most challenging voluntourism projects on the planet today. Celebrating 50 years of political freedom in 2011, Sierra Leone will add momentum to its green programmes.
