From walking the King’s Trail in Sweden to cooking veggies in Turkey, here are a heap of ideas for a wonderful break for solo holidaymakers in 2011 summer:

Cooking Holidays 2011 – Turkey
Ever thought of being a part of a vegetarian cookery course amidst the Taurus Mountains in Turkey? Well, this (and more...) is in store for you at the Yediburunlar Lighthouse that is set between Kalkan and Fethiye. Bond with others over chopping veggies, read through lazy afternoons, chat under the shade of trees or have a swim in the pool – one can also undertake a gulet cruise to top it all. Evenings are centred around a big communal table – eating, talking and comparing notes.

Beach Holidays 2011 – Croatia
The Croatian island called Vis is the farthest from the mainland and is perfect for fishermen, poets, fugitives and solo travellers seeking some seclusion from the world. The verdant island with an extensive variety of herbs along with trees such as pine, palm, oleander, olive, carob, fig and mulberry can be explored fruitfully on a bike. The local cuisine with seafood figuring prominently and wines are quite delicious yet easy on the purse. Other activities a single traveller can indulge in include fishing, swimming, diving and watching turtles/ bottlenose dolphins go about their business. It is advisable to avoid being there between mid-July and mid-August if one wants to rent a room in an old house with sea views without a hassle. Night lovers can head off to the harbour where boats moor back after the day and the locals are quite warm.

Walking Holidays 2011 – Sweden
The Kungsleden or the King’s Trail in northern Sweden is well managed by the youth hostel association of the country. The wild and far-flung hiking trail is 425km long and has comfy dorm huts (deluxe options are also available, featuring saunas and shops in addition) throughout. It takes about one month to cover the whole trail but week-long excursions are also available.

City Holidays 2011 – Russia
Head off to St Petersburg for a memorable sightseeing holiday on the Russian soil. The balmy summer months are great for enjoying the beauty of this corner of the earth, with white nights adding to the fun. The gentle waters of the Neva give an enchanting dimension to any photo you click here. Contrary to the belief that one feels threatened on this land, the locals are quite friendly and desperate to help a tourist. Must visits in St Petersburg include the Hermitage, the summer palace of Peter the Great and the Yusupov Palace which is the site of Rasputin’s murder (?).

Kite-surfing Holidays 2011 – Spain
Tarifa attracts holidaymakers for two main reasons – partying and kite-surfing. It is for the fun of the latter that one can head off to this Spanish jewel for a summer holiday in 2011 and be a participant or a mere spectator. One can simply chill out with delicious grilled seafood kebabs and a glass of mojito in between sessions of kite-surfing – it is easy to make friends here.

So all you solo travellers out here, enjoy your summer break!
