Here’s a bird’s eye view of places you could check out in case you are planning a winter sport holiday in the Balkans:

Serbia for Skiing Holidays 2011
The most developed resort Kopaonik in Serbia is a great ski location. The locals leave the pristine powdery snow all for visitors, one can glide from top of gladed runs. The huts beside the slope offer warm fires and great food in order to recharge yourself after skiing. You could enjoy drinks at the Kafka bar and Zerk restaurant doles out traditional Serbian fare –  do feast on pot-roasted pork and pickled peppers.

Macedonia for Skiing Holidays 2011
The slogan of Popova Shapka is “We Have Snow”. With skiers having a good time on the few groomed runs and the absence of marked piste mean that you can get most of all that powder. Popova is also the base for the only cat-ski operation in Europe – Eskimo Freeride. You could be enjoying vast expanses of snow including great forest runs and open faces. For eating out, the military base is a cheap option and serves quite big portions. Do taste the national dish of Macedonia – the tavce gravce (bean stew).

Montenegro for Skiing Holidays 2011
With heaps of snow and unforgettable birch forest runs, Kolasin gives a feel of the Far East. The open faces over the treeline are steep and have testing descents and a Nordic ski circuit. The high-speed lift and cubed log cabins with the restaurant, cafe and ski hire centre are some of the good things on offer here. If you are a party animal, the wood-and-stone Hotel Lipka is the place for you. The pizza bar is a hit while the slightly upmarket penthouse restaurant is a nice option for gorging on traditional pork and beef steaks along with panoramic views of the surroundings.

Bosnia and Herzegovina for Skiing Holidays 2011
Jahorina offers fun-park like excitement and thrill with a combination of open faces, tree-riding, groomed piste and small drops. The many bars and cafes lend a warm aura to the whole place. And Sarajevo still lives true to its Winter Olympic 1984 heritage. For superb Balkan-Asian fusion food, head off to Mala Kuhinja where the delicacies are prepared right in front of you.
