There is so much in terms of food Italy has on offer that it is often quite confusing where to start from and with what. Zip Holidays presents here a bird’s eye view of some of the best trattorias, ice-cream parlours and cafes in Italy – for a food-underlined holiday to the country in 2011.

Market – Liguria
One of the best markets in Italy is the San Remo which is a familiar name with the locals. One visit and you’d realize the reason behind the beautifully cooked delicacies of the region – fresh ingredients matter indeed. Seafood, wild mushrooms, pesto, artichokes, peaches, olive oil – you name it and have the best of it here in San Remo. If you step here during 2011 Italy holidays, just walk down to the nearby old town of San Remo and dine at Cantine Sanremesi for tasty snacks, and at Il Mulattiere for rabbit cooked with almonds as well as stuffed vegetables.

Lasagne – Le Marche
Right above the verdant fields of Le Marche atop a hill has Macerata with its medieval university, art museum, bell towers, warm people and good food at the many restaurants around. One can have lasagne with a dramatic twist – vincisgrassi – often made from a combination of meats such as rabbit, chicken, port or lamb with truffles and mushrooms. On 2011 holidays to Italy, dine for the delicious lasagne at Da Rosa, Osteria dei Fiori or Trattoria de Ezio.

Pasta and Seafood – Puglia
The Florence of the South – Lecce in Puglia is a place with budding musical tradition, fine university, amazing architecture, refined people and finger-licking good food (some say the food is even better than what you get in Florence). The stewed greens, chickpea puree, pasta and seafood (mussels being the star attraction) are must haves on your Puglia trip in 2011. Cucina Casareccia, Osteria degli Spiriti and Alle Due Corti are the places to dine out at.

Rice – Piedmont
If you are in Italy for 2011 holidays, how can you miss the delicious rice and risotto from Piedmont? Desana is the place to be for the same and the Tenuta Castello B&B for learning all about rice production. The Oryza Restaurant at the hotel doles out delicious rice-based dishes served alongside vegetables, fish, meat and wine. The Barbera risotto is a must try here.

Ice-cream – Sicily
Near the spectacular city of Siracusa, we have the Noto town which offers some of the best ice-cream on the globe. The rose, jasmine and tangerine flavours are simply awesome. The Cafe Sicilia, Corrado Costanza and I Sapori del Val di Noto are some of the places to sample ice-cream. We can bet on anything that has the fragrant agrumi (a kind of citrus fruit) as part of the ingredients. A great way to enjoy 2011 Italy holidays for those with a fondness for the dessert.

Coffee – Friuli-Venezia Giulia
This is the leading coffee hub in Italy. The coffee at the local cafes is served alongside a choice of cakes, made from liqueur, raisins and nuts. James Joyce’s favourite was the Pirona which indeed is a good place to enjoy a mug of coffee during your Italian holiday in 2011. Other cafes you could check out are San Marco, Tommaseo and the La Bomboniera bakery.
