One could occasionally dream of a peaceful holiday amidst the beauty of nature and at the same time being one with it in more ways than one. Here are some green holiday options by the Indian Ocean for 2011:

Tanzania Holidays 2011 – Saadani Safari Lodge
Actually, one gets to enjoy safari as well as beach holidays at Saadani National Park in Tanzania. The lodge has six beachside suites amidst the shade of casuarinas pines along with nine tented cottages as options for accommodation. Solar panel generated electricity and hot water mean the lodge is as eco-friendly as it can be while providing water through a pump to a nearby fishing village. The owners of the lodge make it a point to buy as many necessities as possible from the local community itself.
Double rooms at Saadani start from 327GBP, full board.

India Holidays 2011 – Barefoot at Havelock
This stylish retreat on Havelock Island in the Andaman Islands uses natural compost from its resident elephant as a fertilizer. The eighteen thatched villas and cottages amidst tropical rainforest and besides sprawling stretches of white powdery sand compose the world of Barefoot at Havelock. They serve fresh fish, chicken and eggs along with organic fruits and veggies. Further on the green front, the resort undertakes rainwater harvesting and will soon have solar panels installed.
Double rooms at Barefoot start from 50GBP, breakfast included.

Madagascar Holidays 2011 – Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge
Situated on the south-eastern coast of Madagascar, Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge has six chic cottages shaded by tropical trees and within walking distance from the calm sheltered bay. As part of promoting responsible tourism, the lodge uses solar power and undertaking a tree-planting campaign. The bungalow buildings have been made from local stone, wood and thatch.
Double rooms at Manafiafy start from 230 Euros, full board.

Mozambique Holidays 2011 – Nuarro
The funky eco lodge on the Nanatha Bay has twelve chalets and a marine reserve. Apart from initiating many community welfare programmes, Nuarro uses wind and solar power for its daily needs.
Double rooms at Nuarro start from 370GBP, full board.

Tanzania Holidays 2011 – Pemba Lodge
Opened last year on the far-off Shamiani Island, Pemba Lodge has five bungalows that have been built on stilts, the reason – minimal impact on the environment and great way to have the cool sea breeze. The showers in the bungalows run on collected rainwater and the lodge uses solar electricity for lighting.
Double rooms at Pemba start from 273GBP, full board and inclusive of transfers.

Kenya Holidays 2011 – Kizingo
Composed of eight cottages, Kizingo is located along a sprawling beach on the Lamu Island. Hot water and electricity are generated by solar panels, while wind is used strategically to cool off the rooms rather than air-conditioners. Community initiatives of the lodge include turtle conservation and fund-raising for a local school.
Double rooms at Kizingo start from 260GBP, full board and inclusive of boat transfers.
