1. Use global SIM card or Skype
If you are going abroad for your 2011 gap year holiday, keep in mind that calling home could get quite expensive when you are out of Europe. Buy a local SIM card wherever on earth you are and get talking. On the other hand, if you plan to travel across countries, then buying a global SIM card is a better idea. But probably Skype is the best way to stay in touch with family and friends, no matter where you are calling from. It’s almost free (some calls may charge a nominal amount) and easily accessible.
2. Earn while you holiday
Finalizing a job deal before you go for your gap year holiday in 2011 is better than landing up in a foreign country and then picking up low-paid work. Either go for a planned working holiday programme provided by many organizations, or opt to settle your own placement.
3. Find a travel insurance policy
Ensure a safe hassle-free gap year holiday in 2011 with buying a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Go for one that covers theft, injury, illness, medical costs, lost possessions along with unavoidable curtailment/cancellation of trip. Just remember that you may not be covered for travelling to a country that has been advised against by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
4. Use prepaid money card
A prepaid money card combines the plus points of a debit/credit card and travellers’ cheques. Deposit money before you leave and use the same while abroad for goods, services as well as for withdrawing cash from ATM machines. This is also a good way to stay within the limits of your budget on 2011 gap-year holidays. Prepaid money cards can be reloaded online, through phone and even by text in some cases.
5. Get a tax rebate
If you are a student going for a gap year holiday in 2011, you might be eligible for a tax rebate. Moreover, you can use form P50 to claim overpaid income tax if you have stopped working due to travel and plan not to work in the tax year as well.
