Who said great food can only be had at fine dine restaurants with sky-touching prices on the menu? If you are planning to take holidays in Italy this year, be ready to relish finger-licking Mediterranean delicacies in Venice, following the locals’ lead. Umm... no doubt a delightful gastronomic experience for an unforgettable holiday in 2011!

If you want to taste the best food in this part of Italy, then forget the touristy eating joints with elaborate menus in different languages. Some of these tourist traps also display photographs of pizzas as a catch. The best bet for amazing food in Venice is what they call the “bàcari”. These backstreet bars serving wine and snacks are places frequented by locals, and a must visit for you too.

Try “cicheti” (small-sized snacks unique to Venetian bars) and “òmbra” (tiny glass of wine) at the following bàcari on your visit to the Italian heaven in 2011.

La Cantina
Cannaregio 3689, Campo San Felice
The freshly cooked innovative dishes are the USP of La Cantina – worth dining at during holidays in 2011. Have oysters on ice (9 Euros for six oysters), charcuterie and the amazing array of wines by the glass. This bàcari specializes in raw fish – do check out the minced salmon and tuna with sea bass and cucumber tomato salad.

Alla Vedova
Cannaregio 3912, Ramo Ca’ d’Oro
Alla Vedova is a popular bàcaro in Venice’s Strada Nuova – far from the madding crowds of tourists. Must try during your 2011 holiday in Italy include piping hot pork rissoles (polpette) which come with a small glass of Veneto red – combo costing only 1 Euro.

Do Mori
San Polo 429, Calle dei Do Mori
One of the oldest bàcari in Venice, Do Mori was established way back in 1462. Do Mori is famous for francobollo – small white-bread sandwiches made from sliced meats, gorgonzola, radicchio or even vegetables that have been roasted. Surely a must eat on your 2011 holiday in Venice.

All’ Arco
Calle Arco, San Polo 436
All’ Arco serves only lunch – so be there in time! Fresh fish is the buzz word here, and you’ll soon know why if you happen to be here during your holidays in 2011. Calamari, langoustines, speck, prawns and liver served on bread slices vie with tempting boiled beef sausage sandwiches accompanied by mustard (great comfort food in winter) for your attention.

Ai Do Draghi
Campo Santa Margarita
A popular hangout for students, Ai Do Draghi is also called the red house – because of its facade as well as political orientation. Must haves include the classic cocktail of the region – Spritz.

Già Schiavi
992 Ponte San Trovaso
Situated in Dorsoduro, Schiavi is a famed wine bar that serves food as an aside. One should check out the cheese/ fennel crostini during their 2011 holidays in Italy. And starting from 2 Euros, you get a choice of wines by the glass. The walls that have been covered from floor to ceiling with bottles make for an interesting sight.

Meandering through medieval alleys and floating to soak the magic of Venice along with great food (of course), is an experience hard to capture in words. Do plan your 2011 holidays in Venice and check out its local specialities at their best at the many backstreet bàcari.
