Nan – Thailand
The stunningly beautiful mountainous region of Nan has a rich cultural heritage with the plethora of well-maintained ancient teak buildings and temples. Nan could be a good stopover in a backpacker’s trail in Southeast Asia for their 2011 holidays. The towering Doi Phu Kha Mountain with sprawling rice terrace farms is an absolute visual delight. For a nice dose of local information, head off to the cafe called Hot Bread.

Battambang – Cambodia
Battambag lies close to the Thailand border making it a workable option for a base en route the Cardamom mountain range or to the Angkor temples. Colonial shops and villas remind one of the French connection. Many of the villas have now been converted into hotels and guest houses. Do check out the indigenous but nonetheless remarkable bamboo train in the village of Ban Odomboing. The Riverside Balcony Bar is great for a relaxed evening with nicely done cocktails. A great offbeat option indeed for your 2011 holiday break.

Nong Khiaw – Laos
The misty and quite untouched town of Nong Khiaw amidst a tropical jungle and limestone karsts is a good place to be during your backpacking holidays in 2011. Boat rides on the river Nam Ou present some spectacular sceneries to be feasted on. The main attraction of Nong Khiaw, however, is the unhurried pace of life that draws backpackers seeking some solitude.

Shillong – India
A couple of hours’ flight from the buzzing city of Kolkata will take you to the gateway to the pristine northeast India – Guwahati. From the airport, take a shared taxi or reserve one to reach the neighbouring state of Meghalaya. The capital city Shillong is called the “Scotland of the East” and rightly so for its lush green mountains and sleepy hillside Khasi villages. Do visit Cherrapunjee which is one of the wettest places on the planet. The living-root bridges, gurgling streams and enchanting greenery all around make this a good choice for a refreshing break in 2011.

Karnataka and Kerala – India
The many ashrams by the tropical waves would recharge you for the hectic life back home. The amazing fusion of surfing and yoga along with a strict vegetarian diet works like a wonder. An alternative could be further south at Varkala in the state of Kerala. So get ready for a spiritual backpacking holiday 2011 in southern India.
