Malta Restaurants and dining

Being a tourist hotspot, Malta is home to many fine restaurants. These restaurants serve both local and international cuisines. The local food in Malta is an interprogeny of native and many cultures that ruled the roost in the island. Thus Malta offers an eclectic mix of Mediterranean and outside cooking. Traditional food is rustic and according to the seasons. Local food has some interesting dishes, such as Lampuki Pie or fish pie, Rabbit Stew, Bragioli or beef cooked in olive oil, Kapunata or local ratatouille, and widow’s soup, which includes sheep or goat’s cheese. Most food stalls sell Bigilla, a thick pate of beans with garlic. Hobz biz-zej is a popular snack that contains round of bread dipped in olive oil, decorated with ripe tomatoes, and has a mix of tuna, onion, garlic, and capers.

Seafood and fish is central to many dishes in Malta. Lampuka or dolphin fish, octopus, and squid are used to make stews and pasta sauces. Fenkata, a celebrated meal of Malta, is a feast of rabbit marinated in wine and bay leaves. Sun dried tomatoes are also excellent food to taste in Malta. Another interesting fact about Malta is that the drinking water is sourced from the sea via desalination or from aquifers.

Kinnie is a typical local soft drink in Malta. It is nonalcoholic and made from bitter oranges.  Cisk is the local beer available in Malta. Wines in Malta are also of excellent quality. However, exotic French and Italian wines are easily available.
