Lombardy Region is among Italy’s most prosperous regions. Geographically, Lombardy is nestled between the Alps and the River Po. Lombardy region is divided into three separate geographical zones – mountains, hills and plains. The plains are further categorized into Alta, the high plains, and Bassa, the low plains.

Natural landscapes in the region add to its beauty, and are a delight to experience for the nature lovers. Four prominent lakes in the region are Como, Garda, Iseo, and Maggiore. Lake Como is situated close to the city of Milan. Here, the tourists can enjoy scenic boat trips to a number of aristocratic mansions and gardens, as well as to the beautiful villages of Verenna, Tremezzo, and Bellagio. Como is recognized as the cradle of Roman art in Lombardy Region.

Cremona, a lovely town in the region is located near the River Po. It is famous for being the home to Stradivarious Violin. Bergamo is another town of great tourist interest. The majestic Ducal Palace of Mantova is located in this town. An ancient town in Lombardy Region is Brescia, which has a rich cultural past going back to the Roman era. The town of Pavia is renowned for housing the Charterhouse and a highly exquisitely designed monastery. The exclusive charm and artistic delight of Vigevano is also a key attraction for the tourists.

One of the special attractions of the Lombardy region is its superlative quality of wines and cheese. The internationally popular Italian cheese, Gorgonzola, originated from here. The three prominent wine producing areas of Lombardy include Oltrepò Pavese, Valtellina, and Franciacorta.

Ranging from pre-historic era to the contemporary art, the region is exceptionally rich in its cultural heritage.
