Lhaviyani Atoll is an archipelago, which consists of a chain of 54 islands. Only five of the total 54 islands are inhabited, the rest are either uninhabited or contain industrial units and beach resorts. The capital of Lhaviyani Atoll is Naifaru, which is one of the five inhabited islands on the atoll.
The five inhabited islands in the Lhaviyani Atoll are Naifaru, Kurendhoo, Hinnavaru, Maafilaafushi and Olhuvelifushi. Out of all these islands, Maafilaafushi is the one which has been the most recently inhabited.
History of Lhaviyani Atoll
It has been recently found that the ‘Redin’, an ancient tribe, were the original settlers of Maldives. These were sea farers who worshipped the sun. While in 4th century A.D. Buddhism was the dominant religion in Maldives, Islam was then introduced to the country in A.D. 1153 and became the official religion of the country. Even today, you can find mosques facing the sun in the Lhaviyani Atoll. The local people known the Lhaviyani Atoll as Faadihippolhu.
Tourism in Lhaviyani Atoll
Lhaviyani Atoll is famous for its beautiful resorts. There are a total of four resorts in the Lhaviyani Atoll, namely Komandoo, Kuredu, Palm Beach and Kanuhuraa. These resorts are known for their luxurious accommodations, multi cuisine restaurants and beach bars.
The Lhaviyani Atoll is also famous for the many natural coral formations and diving sites. There are many water sports and other activities that you can be a part of in the Lhaviyani Atoll. There is also a canning factory in Felivaru, an island which is located between Hinnavaru and Naifaru.
