Direct charter flights to Northern Cyprus through the Turkish Cypriots are restricted by the embargo on Turkish Cypriot ports. The Gecitkale and Ercan are the only legal airports for entry of vacation charters through Turkey and Azerbaijan. Since 2004, there have been flights connecting some European countries (including UK) to the Republic of Cyprus. Tourists headed to Northern Cyprus will usually fly to Republic of Cyprus and then to Northern Cyprus by crossing the Green Line.
Kyrenia is located 40 minutes from the Ercan airport. If you have taken the flight to the Larnaca International Airport in Southern Cyprus, Kyrenia will take you an hour to reach by car.
Although the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not internationally recognized, the port of Kyrenia entertains a number of cruise liners. A good percentage of the tourist population in Kyrenia is day-trippers from the cruises, few staying a couple of days or as per their itinerary schedule. Daily boat tours also connect Kyrenia to the towns of the Karpaz Peninsula.
