Kovalam Holidays

The word ‘kovalam’ means ‘a coconut grove’ – epitomizing the lush towering coconut trees which are characteristic of this part of India. Kovalam holidays are scenic and peaceful with glistening sun-soaked sands flanked by coconut and palm trees.

Kovalam is one of the major holiday destinations along the Malabar Coast in the south Indian state of Kerala. Kovalam has risen from being a sleepy fishing village to one of the most popular holiday spots in the area. The golden sands of Kovalam beach are interspersed with black sand due to the presence of minerals. The holiday resort of Kovalam is composed of three crescent-shaped beaches that are separated by verdant cliffs. The Lighthouse Beach is the most popular choice for visitors. The Hawar Beach lies in the middle and is the hub for local fishermen doing their job. The Sumudra Beach is the least developed and most tranquil of the three beaches.

The big community of fishermen in Kovalam offer boat trips along the beaches. Their wooden boats can be seen moored to the shore at many places. Kovalam has established itself as a centre for health and wellness with lots of massage parlours, ayurvedic salons, yoga centres and meditation sessions. Kovalam also has a religious feel to it with a number of Hindu places of worship.
