Located a little away from the Hikkaduwa beach, towards the inland, is the Gangarama Maha Vihara. This Buddhist temple displays fine specimens of folk art and paintings. The lake located near Hikkaduwa is worth a visit for some interesting bird-watching. Safaris down the Madhu River in Balapitiya, and excursions to the cinnamon plantations and moonstone mines of Meetoyagoda, are also highly recommended.

Located in Hikkaduwa are several Tsunami Memorials. One of the most tragic tsunami memorials is the train at Hikkaduwa railway station. Several buildings that were hit by the tsunami wave also stand along Hikkaduwa’s coastline.

Post tsunami, Hikkaduwa resort has reconstructed most of its buildings and very little proof of the disaster can be witnessed today. Overall, Hikkaduwa is a nice place to spend relaxing holidays and if you wish a bit of solitude.
