Gambia Getting there and around

Private taxis ply between Dakar (Senegal) and Barra, where ferry service takes you to Banjul. Shared buses are also available on this route.

UK cities connected to Banjul Airport include Bristol, London Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. Carriers include Gambia International Airlines and others such as Afrinat and Mahfooz Aviation.

Gambian Authority for Public Transport operates buses and large vans to outer villages and towns in the country. These vehicles have set starting points and can get overloaded as they are not very frequent. Ferries are run by the Public Transport Authority. Generally speaking, for all journeys during your Gambia holidays that are over a few km or non-return journeys, it’s advisable to hire private vehicles such as a taxi.

“Green” or tourist taxis are considerably more expensive than the standard yellow or “bush” taxis that offer rides to virtually every town on Gambia holidays, but you need to hail one away from a tourist area as they are always eager to avoid altercations with tourist cabbies.
