Four valleys dissect the Drakensberg Mountains into three zones; northern, central and southern. Each of these regions has its own attraction for holidaymakers. Northern Drakensberg range has the highest peaks reaching up to 3000m. The Natal Drakensberg Park is spread across most of the region. The Park is well known for its wealth of flora and fauna and boasts the world’s second highest waterfalls, the Tugela Falls. The hike to the Tugela Falls is very popular with tourists.
The Central Drakensberg region has many attractions. The Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park of this region is a World Heritage site. The Giants Castle Game Reserve draws scores of enthusiastic visitors. The Bushman Rock Art sites in this region are famous for their ancient paintings.
The Southern Drakensberg region is remote and has a spectacular expanse of unspoiled wilderness, lakes and rivers. Fishing is a favorite pastime with the visitors here. The region also has plenty of wildlife.
The Drakensberg Mountain region is regularly visited by hikers, trekkers, rock climbers, anglers and bird watchers. Even botanists and golfers are attracted to this region. Horse-riding, canoeing, river rafting, tennis, etc, can also be enjoyed here. There are visitors who just come here to relax in the calm, quiet surroundings of the Drakensberg region.
