Although the first hotel in Costa Calma was built in 1977, it was not until 1984 that the area witnessed a major tourism boom. Located 80km south of the Fuerteventura Airport, Costa Calma was difficult to access until the road construction linking Morro Jable to the capital Puerto del Rosario was completed. This was followed by setting up a proper electricity network in the area, which heralded the building of hotels and apartments in Costa Calma.
More than 20 years have passed, and today, the resort of Costa Calma is brimming with lodging facilities, restaurants and shopping areas tailored to suit German vacationers. There are also few English companies that operate in the area and it is not hard to find English style bars and cafes.
Costa Calma’s major attraction is its white sandy beaches, especially that of Playa Barca, to the southwest of the island. It’s always easy to find a nice, hidden spot on the beach, and this makes Costa Calma beaches extremely popular with honeymooners, and couples in general. In summer, the beaches enjoy strong off-shore winds making conditions ideal for windsurfing. Scuba diving, sailing and snorkeling are also popular with tourists.
Costa Calma nightlife is low-key, although there are several discos available throughout Jandia. In most cases, hotels provide their own entertainment, which range from live music shows to karaoke nights and parties. During the day, these hotels will also provide day-trip facilities to La Lajita Oasis Park and the Morro traditional fishing village, and around the island.
