Fuerteventura has enjoyed active promotion in the last couple of years that has resulted in a tourism boom on this island. Corralejo is northern Fuerteventura’s most popular tourist resort and welcomes the majority of vacationers visiting this side of the island.
Each year, the number of tourists increase, and new hotels and apartments are built to accommodate them. Today, Corralejo appears remarkably different from the once small Canarian fishing village. Now a lively resort town with elegant hotels, expensive to budget lodging options, a wide choice of restaurants, bars and pubs, Corralejo offers superb amenities that are comparable to many international resorts. But all is not lost to commercialization, for although very little remains of a traditional village town, Corralejo is still charming and for the most part, unspoiled. Grandes Playas is a protected area and except the already built Hotel Riu Palace and the Riu Oliva, no other hotel construction is allowed in this area. The several shops and restaurants you will find in this area are all built on original Canarian houses.
The bunch of hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants in Corralejo are located along the town’s main street and the harbor area. To the east lie the vast sand dunes, a fantastic location for jeep safaris, quad biking and camel rides. The beach draws the main attention however. Golden-white sand and the warm sea is the focus of many fun and exciting activities. Swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing and diving are all in a day’s work at Corralejo.
