Known as the Sailing Capital of the World, the Abacos Islands are known for their calm waters and the boating sports. Those who own their own boats bring out their vessels to sail and cruise in the Abaco Islands. Those who do not have their own boats, can charter one and enjoy traveling to some of the most picturesque coves and the isolated cays. These coves and cays, which pepper the sea around the Abaco Islands, are the perfect adventure spots for those who enjoy such escapades.
The Abaco Islands are also home to the Abaco Barbs, beautiful wild horses that are considered one of the finest of the species. The Abaco Barbs inhabit the pine forests that line the Abaco Islands, and have recently found to be the original descendants of the Spanish line of horses which were introduced to the Abaco Islands years ago. The Abaco Barbs are a rare species which are considered endangered. Only in the Abaco Islands can you find this magnificent animal in its natural habitat.
The water surrounding the Abaco Islands is shallow and therefore a haven for water sport lovers. There are regular ferries from Florida to the Abaco Islands which ferry tourists to and fro. Apart from the ferries, there is a scurry of white sails of sailboats which are a frequent sight at the horizons of the Abaco Islands. The beaches are fresh and there are plenty of outdoor activities to do. A myriad of resorts also offer many different restaurants and bars.
At the Abaco Islands, you can also charter a ride to a nearby cay or a reef in order to snorkel. There are plenty of water sports operators that operate in the Abaco Islands. A place of interest to those who enjoy water sports is the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park. This is a sports sanctuary in the Abaco Islands where you can enjoy both water sports and other land based physical activities. Apart from the Park, there are also several exotic dive sites which are a favorite with the tourists. The Shark Wall and the Fowl Cay Marine Preserve are some of the dive sites where one can experience the rich aqua life under the clear waters. The Man – o – War Cay and the Great Guana Cay are some of the other areas worth visiting in the Abaco Islands.
Many different fish trollers also operate in this area and tourists can hop on to these to experience big game fishing. The waters around the Abaco Islands are full of Blue Marlin and Tuna.
On weekends, Abaco Islands play host to several different parties. The Nipper’s Beach Bar Pig Roast party is one of the most famous in the Abaco Islands. Towards the Elbow Cay, you can also visit the lighthouse, which is considered iconic due to its long history. The lighthouse stands gaunt on the Abaco Islands and is considered the historic center of the small archipelago.
