Maldives, an island country, is a group of hundreds of small islands or atolls clustered in the Indian Ocean. It is also the smallest country in Asia consisting of 26 islands and around 1200 islets. Transportation is not much of a concern as well. A well-distributed network of ferries takes tourists from one islet to another. Speed Boats and Dhonis are the other widely used means of transportation. Male and Addu are the only places where road transport is feasible. Taxis and private cabs can be hired here.

Maldives - Demography

According to an estimate, Maldives’ local population in 2007 was around 300,000 of which about 100,000 are immigrants, either working or settled illegally. Most of the immigrants are from Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. Islam is the main religion though other religions are practised as well. Dhivehi is the main official language besides English, which is widely spoken as well.
