The most populous city of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its second largest Emirate, exciting Dubai has over the last few years gained great prominence as a major investment and holiday destination in the Middle East with several million tourists coming on Dubai holidays each year. The city is well located on the north coast of UAE and borders the Persian Gulf on its western coast. It is a multicultural and diverse city with a population of over 1.5 million, the majority of which consists of expatriates from Asia. Although Dubai’s official language is Arabic, its several communities speak other languages such as English, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese and Bengali etc.
Historically it has been an important port and Venetian pearl merchants who visited the region in the late 16th century have mentioned Dubai for its pearling industry. The Al Maktoum dynasty took over the city in 1833 and continues to rule it today. The discovery of oil in 1966 saw an influx of workers from the Indian Subcontinent, as a result of which Dubai’s population saw a threefold increase in the next decade. Now with the opening of trading ports with Hong Kong and Crete (Greece), sea trade is at its best.
In recent years, the tremendous success of Jebel Ali free zone has inspired other free zones such as Dubai Media City and Dubai Internet City. Ambitious projects such as The Palm Islands, Burj Dubai and The World Islands have been at the helm of its private real estate boom and have contributed to Dubai cheap holidays becoming a popular option. The 818 Meter Burj Dubai skyscraper, which upon completion will officially become the tallest manmade structure ever built, is a very popular spot for tourists on Dubai holidays. Beaches are amongst the most developed in the world but still provide that feeling of nature and gorgeous views as you'd expect on a Fuerteventura holiday perhaps.
