Balmy Barbados is an independent democratic Island Nation located in the western Atlantic Ocean. It lies to the East of St Lucia, north of Trinidad and Tobago and close to Dominican Republic.
This beautiful island country that was ruled by the British for over three centuries gained independence in 1966 and still maintains Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. For a long time it was famous as one of the largest centres for Sugarcane production. Recent years have seen it become a major investment hub. British sailors who first arrived in Barbados, went on to Florida en route to the present day United States. Like Barbados, holidays to Florida are amongst the most popular among British holiday makers.
This petite West Indian country has an area of 430 sq. km. and a population of about 300,000. Approximately 90% of all Barbadians (also called Bajan) are of African descent, with European and Asian minorities. The official language is English and its local dialect is called Bajan. Recognised regional languages are Hindi and Bhojpuri. Most Barbadians are Christians, with Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and other minorities.
